The Blue Orchid

The blue orchid is a music box which plays a personal playlist of ones of my favorite songs which concern about feminism. All these song has been rearrange by me on music sheets used for this particular ribbon music box.
The music box has the shape of an orchid, as for my other works, the word orchid derives from the Greek and it means "testicle", in contrast with the shape of the flower which reminds female sexual organs. It is a blue orchid, because blue orchids are rare in nature, and I think it's interesting that we can't find blue orchids, and blue is the color typically associated with males.
Music boxes reminds us childhood, in our imagination they usually plays classic music with a dancer on it, they usually are destimated to young girls as toys. Toys are still today separate for boys and girls, the definition of roles for the binary sexes starts from childhood, and the distinction of toys is one of the factors.
The blue orchid is a music box which performs songs with a clear message of equality and female pride, songs that has been fundamental for my growth as a woman and as a person.
It is a music box that I would have loved to own when I was a little girl.
"the blue orchid" music box is my self portrait, where the blue orchid means that we can be who we want to be, without roles or stereotypes which are the result of social constructions.
I hope that through this music box, more blue orchids will grow.
