impure/pure, pure/impure

2020

fabric flowers, 30x 30 cm

Inspired by two fact that concert the vagina and woman's sexuality in thought and society.
A woman is usually considered "pure" if she doesn't have a free sexual life, we use to teach girls to suppress their sexual desire for being pure and a "good girl", and girl are not encouraged to explore their sexuality. This doesn't happens for men.
This fact is the base of infibulation, which inspired me for this work and made me shiver. It's about the mutilation of the female genital organs and the suturing of the vulva, where it is left a hole for urinating and menstruation, accompanied by the removal of the clitoral glans.
Once married, the husband cut the tissue and have the intercourse.
In places like Somalia, a no-infibulated woman is considered impure and not accepted by society.
I can't imagine how painful this can be.
What do we consider "Pure"?
It should be a free flower, as it is made by nature.
